Downtown was a community largely untouched until the late 1990's. There are historic pockets that still remain intact in the area, but they are becoming fewer and farther between. The Fulton Mall is one of the areas that has been preserved. Comprised of six blocks of pedestrian mall shopping, Fulton is home to an array of shops, restaurants, public arts and stores for the Downtown community to enjoy. The mall is listed on the California Register of Historic Resources.

Old Fig Garden is one of Fresno's most affluent and prestigious communities. Old Fig Garden, a 6 square mile area, lies on the northern edge of the city.
