Jackson is the capital and most populous city in Mississippi. Jackson was originally named Parkerville. Jackson holds one of the two county seats in Hinds County. In 1963, civil rights activist Medgar Evers was killed in Jackson. The "City of Soul" has a US Census 2010 estimated population of 673,061. Jackson was ranked 3rd of 100 largest metropolitan areas, and considered the city where you can get the "Best Bang for your Buck" by Forbes. Jackson, like most major cities, has a relative high crime rate. Neighborhoods such as Taylorville, Byram, and Forest Avenue have significantly lower rates of crime.
Downtown is at the center of the commercial, business, and entertainment in Jackson. A number of the large companies and corporations who are headquartered in Jackson have prominent office buildings downtown. The Governor's Mansion is located near the center of the downtown community. Jackson State University, Millsaps College and Belhaven College are prominent residents of the downtown community, as is Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. There are several green ways downtown including Jaycee Park and Battlefield Park. There are a variety of shops trendy stores, bars, restaurants, and entertainment spots in the downtown community for residents and tourists to enjoy. The housing stock downtown is mixed. There are mix use buildings, historic homes, and a number of apartment high rises. A number of rental properties lie immediately outside the various college campuses. Jackson Public School District provides educational services in the community as do a number of private schools. Public transportation is easily accessed in the downtown area.
Broadmoor is a neighborhood just north of downtown. Broadmoor is loosely bounded by North West Street on the east, Meadowbrook Road on the north, Interstate 55 on the west, and East Woodrow Wilson Avenue on the south. The University of Mississippi Medical Center, Doctor's Hospital and GV Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center feature prominently in the Broadmoor community. Most of the residential section of Broadmoor is located in the northern section. There are a number of single family homes in the area as well as homes for rent or lease. Apartment communities are located close to Meadowbrook Road in the northeast section.
Colonial Heights is a neighborhood located west of Interstate 220. Hawkins Field Airport is located within the borders of Colonial Heights and features prominently on the west side of the community. Hinds Jr. College is located in the northwest region and is butted against Bradley Park. Immediately to the south of Colonial Heights is Livingston Park. Both of the green spaces in and near Colonial Heights give the residents great opportunities to enjoy outdoor recreational activities. Most of Colonia Heights is residential. There is a small business district with local shops and restaurants in the area. The rental properties in the community are located primarily along the southern edge near Bullard Street and Interstate 220.
North Pointe Estates is a neighborhood located east of the Rose R. Barnett Reservoir. North Pointe Estates is loosely bounded by South Wheatley Street to the east, Rice Road to the north, Spillway Road to the west and Country Line Road to the south. North Point Estates is a sprawling residential community with a small business district where residents can enjoy restaurants, boutiques, antique stores, and bars. Friendship Park provides green space to the residents of North Pointe Estates. The housing stock in North Point is comprised primarily of single family homes. There are clusters of apartment communities in the northeast, southeast and northwest sectors of the community.
Rolling Hills is a neighborhood located southeast of the Rose R. Barnett Reservoir. Rolling Hills is bounded by East Country Line to the north, Old Canton Road to the west, and South Pear Orchard Road to the southeast. Rolling Hills has several small lakes within the borders of the community. Rolling Hills is mostly residential. There are rental properties available throughout the community with a number of apartment complexes located in the northeastern section of the neighborhood.
Citizenís Southwest is a sprawling residential community located east of Interstate 55. Citizens Southwest is bounded on the north by Raymond Road, on the east by Robinson Road Expressway, and Cooper Road on the south. Citizenís Southwest has pockets of commercial establishments throughout the community. The housing stock in Citizenís Southwest is mixed. There are a number of single family homes, a large number of houses for rent or lease, and apartment communities dispersed throughout the neighborhood. Citizenís Southwest proximity to the interstate makes it a desirable place to live especially for those who need to commute into the downtown area.
