Poughkeepsie is the county seat of Dutchess County New York. Poughkeepsie in the Native American language is translated "reed covered lodge by the little water place." Chartered in 1854, Poughkeepsie is frequently referred to by the locals as "Queen City of the Hudson", because of its proximity to the Hudson River, and the trade that was generated there. IBM has a large presence in the community as well as many other technology based companies. G. Gordon Liddy is one of the most famous residents of Poughkeepsie.

Poughkeepsie has a relatively high crime rate for a city its size. Some of the safest neighborhoods in the area are Knapps Corner, Spackenhill, and Crown Heights, to name a few.
Mt. Carmel District is home to Marist College and St. Francis Hospital. Mt. Carmel is bounded by US Route 9 on the west and the Hudson River to the east. St. Anthony's Street Festival is held in Mt. Spackenhill is a Poughkeepsie neighborhood that is home to many of the employees of IBM. Spackenkill is serviced by Spackenkill Union Free School District. There are a number of small neighborhoods located within the borders of Spackenkill. Near the center of the Spackenkill community is a large expanse of green space that avails the residents of Spackenhill a variety of recreational activities including kiting, biking walking, jogging, and picnicking. The housing stock in Spackenkill is predominantly single family homes; however, there are some homes for rent and apartment communities on the west side of the neighborhood.
Fairview is a hamlet in Poughkeepsie located north of downtown. Fairview is home to St. Francis Hospital and a portion of the Marist College campus. Inwood Lake is in the northwest section of the community and provides the residents of Fairview opportunities for fishing and boating. College Hill Park is directly south of Fairview and residents of the neighborhood can utilize the green space to engage in recreational activities. Both public and private schools service the community and gives families in the area options as far as their children’s education.
Crown Heights is located west of Poughkeepsie proper. Crown Heights is a sprawling area with the majority of the residential community located in the northwest quadrant. Crown Heights is bounded by S. Road and Sheafe Road. Cobalt Lake is located in the southern section of Crown Heights and the eastern border is the Hudson River. The majority of the homes in Crown Heights are single family. There are a few apartment communities to the southwest of the neighborhood.
Dover Plains is a hamlet in Poughkeepsie bounded by Hooker Road and South Road. Bartlett Park is in the northern corner of the community and offers the residents of Dover Plains great green ways for all kinds of recreational activities. Dover Plains is predominantly residential consisting of single family homes. There are apartments and homes for rent in the southwest sector of the community. Both public and private schools are available to the residents of Dover Plains.
