Syracuse was incorporated in 1825. Syracuse is the county seat of Onondaga County, and the 5th most populous city in New York. Brighton is a Syracuse neighborhood bounded on the west by Interstate 17, on the south by West Brighton Avenue, on the east by Cortland Avenue, and on the north by West Kennedy Street. Brighton is home to Kirk Park, which provides a host of recreational activities for the residents of Brighton to enjoy. The housing stock in Brighton consists mostly of single family homes. There are some houses for rent or least on the western border of the community. Brighton also has apartment complexes on the east side for those seeking to rent.

Eastwood, "The village within the city" is bounded by James Street to the north, Burnett Avenue to the south, Route 635 to the west and South Midler Avenue to the east. Eastwood is primarily a residential community with a section of retail stores, restaurants, and shops near James Street. Interstate 690 is located immediately south of the community and Eastwood makes for an easy commute to the downtown area. The housing in Eastwood is primarily single family homes. There are apartment communities to the east of South Midler Avenue.

Elmwood is a neighborhood bounded by Velasko Road on the east, McDonald Road on the northwest, South Avenue on the west, and West Seneca Turnpike on the south. Elmwood Park is located in the northwest section of the neighborhood, and Onondaga Hill Park is located to the east of the Elmwood community. Both parks give the residents opportunities to enjoy outdoor recreational activities. Community General Hospital is located south of the Elmwood community. Elmwood is primarily residential and comprised of single family homes. There are some rental properties located in the lower eastern section of the neighborhood.

Galeville is a lakefront community in Syracuse. Galeville is bounded by Interstate 81 on the west, County Road 45 on the northwest, County Road 145 to the northeast and Old Liverpool Road to the southeast. Onondaga Lake Parkway sits to the southeast of the community. Galeville is just a few minutes from Onondaga Lake. Lakefront property is extremely desirable and can be rather cost prohibitive for some. There are rental properties available further inland in the Galeville community that includes apartments, condos, and homes for rent or lease.

Strathmore is a suburb located east of Syracuse. Strathmore is bounded on the north by Bellevue Avenue, on the west by Onondaga Avenue, on the south by Glenwood Avenue, and on the east by South Geddes Street. Hawatha Lake and Onondaga Park lie at the center of Strathmore. Residents of the neighborhood have the best of both worlds. Onondaga Park provides great land based recreational activities for the residents of Strathmore to enjoy, and Hawatha Lake provides water based activities for the residents as well. Strathmore is predominantly residential with apartment communities located north and south of the residential areas.

University is a neighborhood in Syracuse that houses a number of the institutions of higher learning. University is located just west of the downtown area. SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and Syracuse University are prominent residents of the community; as are Syracuse Veteran Medical Center and Richards Hutchings Psychiatric Center. University is bounded by Oakwood Cemetery to the south and Genesee Street to the north. Thornden Park lies east of the University community and provides great green space for the residents of University to enjoy. Housing is located around the densely populated campus/hospital area and includes both homes for lease and apartment communities.
