Crime Rate

New York City's crime rate has decreased in the last 15 years, with major crimes at a historic low. New York City is ranked as the 6th safest city by Forbes and is notably safe for a city it's size. Safer neighborhoods include harlem, Rockaway beach in Queens, and Tudor City on the east side.

Top Neighborhoods

Park Slope is a neighborhood in the western section of Brooklyn, New York City's most populous borough. Park Slope is characterized by its historic buildings, top-rated restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as close access to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Museum. Park Slope is considered one of New York City's most desirable neighborhoods. In 2010, it was ranked #1 in New York by New York Magazine citing its quality public schools, dining, nightlife, shopping, access to public transit, green space, quality housing, safety, and creative capital, among other aspects.Park Slope is the very definition of a well-rounded neighborhood. Itís blessed with excellent public schools, low crime, vast stretches of green space, scores of restaurants and bars, a diverse retail sector, and a population of more artists and creatives than even its reputation for comfortable bohemianism might suggest.

The Lower East Side is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of the New York City. It has traditionally been an immigrant, working class neighborhood, but has undergone rapid gentrification in recent years, prompting The National Trust for Historic Preservation to place the neighborhood on their list of America's Most Endangered Places. The Lower East Side has some of the cityís best nightlife, along with outstanding restaurants and shops. Itís conveniently located in Lower Manhattan. Itís vital and energetic, gentrifying but reasonably diverse. Apartment rental is considered average, by New York standards. Few neighborhoods offer such a real New York city experience.

Sunnyside is a hidden gem if there ever was oneóHousing is considered very affordable, for New York City standards. The neighborhood is culturally diverse, with communities of Armenians, Romanians, Indians, Bangladeshis, Chinese, Koreans, Colombians, and Ecuadorians throughout. Sunnyside has safe, quiet neighborhoods with better-than-average schools and easy access to public transportation; both subway and train. Sunnyside has easy access to Manhattan, and Long Islands restaurants and nightlife. The Sunnyside neighborhood still has lots of green space, which by New York real estate standards is highly desirable.

Cobble Hill, sandwiched between the similarly charming and high ranking neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights and Carroll Gardens, offers the best of both of those worlds. Cobble Hill is a culturally diverse middle class neighborhood with good schools and great access to public transportation. Smith and Court Streets are among the most interesting and diverse retail corridors in the city, and the housing stock is superb, with beautiful and well-maintained nineteenth-century homes and plenty of modern amenities. Cobble Hill was once the home of Winston Churchill's mother, Lady Randolph Churchill, (1854-1921).

Greenpoint has some of the best public schools in the city, achieving high test scores and parent-satisfaction ratings, in spite of (or perhaps because of) its small population. It is slightly cheaper and safer than adjacent Williamsburg and has a respectable number of restaurants and bars. There are downsides: The retail coverage is patchy, there are few parks, and it sits on top of an underground oil spill that is still being cleaned up after 30 years. But as long as you donít go swimming in Newtown Creek, itís a vibrant, affordable place to raise a family.

Brooklyn Heights is an upper middle class neighborhood in Brooklyn city, New York. The neighborhood is earmarked by a concentration of over 600 pre-Civil War houses, one of the largest ensembles of such housing in the nation. The human scale of the three, four- and five-story buildings creates an especially neighborly atmosphere.Commute times into the densest parts of Manhattan are faster than all but a few neighborhoods on the island itself. The historic Brooklyn Bridge Park has been newly expanded, offering very desirable green space. Brooklyn Heights is considered safe, with tree lined streets and quiet neighborhoods. There is a quaint retail artery and access to major retail areas and restaurants are easily accessible via subway and train.

Carroll Gardens is known for tree-lined streets, beautiful brownstones with front and back gardens, a diverse array of restaurants and bars, good local delis and Italian markets: Carroll Gardensís charms are well catalogued. Carroll Park is a block-long area of playgrounds, walkways and sitting areas between Court and Smith Streets, with Carroll Street as its southern boundary and President Street on the northern side. Carroll Garden's is sprinkled with antique shops, cafes, and boutiques, and boasts a beautiful waterfront. This picturesque middle class neighborhood is considered a great place to raise a family.
