6 Things to Know Before Moving to Atlanta

Founded at the intersection of two railroad lines, Atlanta, Georgia is the capital and the most populous city in the state. Atlanta is a haven for foodies with farmers' markets sprinkled throughout the city, an exciting restaurant scene, and an ever-growing food truck community. (Atlanta is also the headquarters of Waffle House. You can't throw a stone without hitting one.) Before you decide to call the bustling city your new home, there are some things you should know first.

1. Atlanta Has Quite a Few Nicknames

Get used to hearing the city called everything but its name. The ATL, The Big Peach, City in a Forest, Hotlanta, Dogwood City, the list goes on and on. But did you know that Atlanta is actually already a nickname? Atlanta is short for Atlantica-Pacifica, but who has the time to say all that?

2. It's the Zombie Capital of the World

Move aside, Pittsburgh. Atlanta is the new mecca for zombie lovers. The Walking Dead is filmed in Atlanta meaning there's always a chance to see cast members around the city. Atlanta also hosts a zombie walk, a zombie run, a zombie convention, the Buried Alive Film Fest and Atlanta Horror Festival. If you're a zombie enthusiast, you'll feel right at home.

3. Peaches as Far as the Eye Can See

Even though Georgia produces fewer peaches than California and South Carolina, it's still considered "The Peach State", so prepare to be confused as there are 71 streets in the city with some variation of "Peachtree" in their name. (Insert peach emoji)

4. An Entrepreneurial City

While the Atlanta job market is looking golden for 2017, the city is also becoming a hub for people with a more entrepreneurial spirit. In 2013, it was named the best city in the country to start a business and we expect that not much has changed since then. So, if finding a job deems too challenging, consider starting your own business.

5. It's (Usually) Sunny in Atlanta

You can usually count on the weather in Atlanta to be nice. While the temperature in the winter doesn't get far below freezing very often, the summer months are nothing but sunshine. Expect hot summers and relatively mild winters in Hotlanta.

6. Atlanta Is A Coke Town

No, we don't mean like that. Ask for a Pepsi in Atlanta and expect to get slapped. Coca-Cola was invented in Atlanta back in 1886 and we don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. Atlantians even substitute the word 'coke' in to mean soda or pop.

These facts are just a small dip into the unique culture and life in Atlanta. To fully understand Atlanta, you have to immerse yourself in it. You won't regret it.
