Top Neighborhoods

Downtown is the hub of the Louisville area. Since 2000 there has been exponential growth in the residential large scale complexes as well as retail centers. A number of old warehouses have been converted to loft space and mix usage buildings like the $20 million redevelopment of the 8 story Henry Clay building. Some of the attractions in the downtown area include Museum Row, Louisville Glassworks, Fort Nelson Park and the East Market District known for its trendy shops, and art galleries. Residents of the downtown area are predominantly young professionals who work and play downtown. There are great amenities and public transportation is readily available.

Old Louisville is a historic neighborhood in Louisville and the largest preservation district in Kentucky. Old Louisville is known for its brick homes and stained glass windows. The neighborhood is famous for hosting the St. James Court Art Show and is one of the most economically and ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the state. There continues to be new commercial and residential development had the neighborhood has been and is drawing students and young professionals to the area. The University of Louisville and Spaulding University are housed adjacent to the Old Louisville Neighborhood.

Butchertown is a neighborhood in Louisville that originated around 1820. Young professionals have been migrating to Butchertown since the late 1990's. Many storefronts along Market Street have been converted into condominiums; spawning the new development of art galleries and specialty shops in the area. A number of other buildings have been converted for mixed use. The historic home of Thomas Edison is in Burthcertown, as is Louisville Extreme Park. The business district has a number of quaint shops, coffee houses, cafes and meeting spots for the residence of Butchertown to enjoy.

Phoenix Hill, a neighborhood located just east of the downtown area, is bounded by Market and Preston Streets. Phoenix Hill hosts a large section of the University of Louisville’s Health Science campus. Housing is being developed in the area to cater to the large student population. A number of buildings are being converted for mix use, and the retail area is thriving. Phoenix Hill is known for its night time activities, eateries, and other fine dining restaurants. Residents of Phoenix Hill have great schools to choose from, and there is public transportation to help you get around.

The Highlands is a neighborhood with a bustling business district and adjacent residential area. Because of the large numbers of eateries in the area, The Highlands is lovingly referred to by locals as "Restaurant Row." The Double mint Twins have a home in the Highlands. In recent years, the Highlands have been known for its night life. However, there is a growing number of residential areas being developed as well as mixed use buildings. There are a number of single screen movie theatres that still exist in Highlands and the residents of this neighborhood take advantage of them. The Highlands have a good school system and public transportation is available.

Smoketown is located approximately 1 mile southeast of downtown. Smoketown is not only known for its smoking kilns but also for its small shotgun houses and narrow streets. Smoketown has historically been and continues to be a predominantly African American neighborhood. There are great antique stores in the business district that draw hundreds from hundreds of miles away to the Smoketown neighborhood. Residents of Smoketown have great school options to choose from, and with its proximity to downtown, can take advantage of everything both communities have to offer.
