Hartford, CT

Hartford is one of the oldest cities in the United States and is the capital of Connecticut. Hartford shares the Bradley International Airport with Springfield. Hartford has two very popular nicknames: "The Knowledge Corridor" because of the approximate 120,000 students who attend the 32 colleges and universities there; and "The Insurance Capital of the World" because of the number of insurance company headquarters in the area; some of which are The Hartford, Travelers, Aetna, and Hartford Steam Boiler.

Hartford ranked 19th in the United States in 2010. There are a number of neighborhoods and communities in and near Hartford with a lower crime rate.

Top Neighborhoods

Downtown is the primary business center of Connecticut. The downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes 8 historic district. The Wadsworth Atheneum, the oldest public art museum in the country, is located in downtown Hartford. Downtown represents the best in urban living with a number of trendy and chic restaurants, shopping areas, bars, cafes, coffeehouses, and night clubs to take advantage. Public transportation is available within the downtown area. The Hartford 21 is a multi unit apartment building that has been recently added to the downtown skyline.

Frog Hollow was originally developed as a multi unit family community and continues in that trend today. Frog Hollow, named after the marshes between Ward and Broad Streets, is home to Pope Park; 75 acres of green space that provide a number of outdoor and recreational activities to the residents of the neighborhood. The Frog Hollow neighborhood has a diverse ethnic and cultural retail strip, and a number of people come into the area for ethnic cuisine. Historically home ownership has been low in Frog Hollow, but that is rapidly changing. There are a number of rental properties available in the area for new comers to the area to take advantage of, however. There are great public and private schools in the area, and public transportation is accessible.

West End is a neighborhood just past the West Harbor border and the historic Mark Twain House. The West End is home to Elizabeth Park commissioned by Charles Pond in 1895. Mr. Pond named the park in honor of his wife. Elizabeth Park has a playground, softball field, and a host of outdoor recreational activities like biking and fishing for the residents of West End to enjoy. The park also features one of the oldest rose gardens in the Hartford area. The University of Connecticut School of Law and Hartford Seminary are located in the west end, and the housing stock is reflective of the student community in affordability.

Clay Arsenal & Upper Albany neighborhoods are home to a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic diverse population that provide the area with rich color and interesting flair and artistic presence. A number of West Indian and Caribbean's have settled in the Clay Arsenal and Upper Albany neighborhoods. Although not one of the more affluent areas in Hartford, there are sections of the neighborhood that have been revitalized. Residents of the area are committed to making sure their neighborhood makes a strong comeback and continues to thrive.

North Meadows is a neighborhood located north of downtown. Although North Meadows has concentrated areas of commercial and industrial development, there is still prime housing stock to be had. There are a variety of retail stores and eateries in the area, as well as green space. the most notable park in the area offers a boat launch, playground, and a high ropes challenge course. There is renewed interest in the waterfront of the Connecticut River that could bring additional housing and commercial development to the area.
