Madison, WI

Madison was founded in 1836 and is the capital and county seat of Dane County. The University of Wisconsin makes its home in Madison. With a 2010 US Census estimated population of 233,209, Madison is the 2nd largest city in Wisconsin and the 81st largest in the United States. A number of the streets in Madison are named after the men who signed the constitution. Madison is referred to as the "City of Four Lakes" because of residents Yahara, Lake Mendota, Monona, and Waubesa Lakes.

Crime Rate

The crime rate in Madison is slightly lower than most cities of comparable size. There are a number of neighborhoods with lower crime rates such as Old Sauk, Nakoma, and Cherokee.

Top Neighborhoods

Old Sauk is located southeast of Lake Mendota. Old Sauk is bounded on the north by Old Sauk Road; on the west by North Whitney Way; on the south by Mineral Point Road, and on the east by North Gammon Road. The Old Sauk neighborhood has five parks: Glen Oaks, Garner, Owen, Borner and Mineral Point. Having so much green space in the neighborhood makes Old Sauk a very desirable place to live. The parks offer a variety of amenities including walking, jogging and biking trails, playgrounds, ball fields and picnic areas. There are a number of apartment complexes in the southeast sector of the neighborhood. There are also homes for rent or lease and apartment communities in the northwest section of the neighborhood.

Nakoma is a neighborhood that borders the green space of Lake Wingra. Nakoma is a small quaint residential community. Nakoma is bounded by Cherokee Drive on the east, and Manitou Way on the southwest. The University of Wisconsin is located southwest of the Nakoma neighborhood. There are rental homes and apartments near the center of the Nakoma community. Residence of Nakoma has the opportunity to take advantage of the water amenities the lake offers and the outdoor recreation activities the park offers.

Shorewood Hills is located north of the downtown area. Shorewood Hills borders Lake Mendota. Lake Shorewood is bounded by University Avenue to the south. Bramm's is bounded by South Park Street on the East and Koster Street on the west.

Hills Farm University has a number of housing options including several apartment communities throughout the neighborhood.
