Union Square Just nine-tenths of a mile from Camden Yards Baseball Stadium, the Union Square/Hollins Market Historic District sits on the rich historical ground of Southwest Baltimore; or as the locals call it, Sowebo. Much of the neighborhood is built on the former estate of Thorowgood Smith, a shipper, merchant and previous mayor of Baltimore from 1804 to 1808. Named for the gracefully charming park resting at its center, Union Square is an exceptional and diverse urban setting. The neighborhood is home to several art galleries, artist studios, and The 1870 Guest House; overlooking the square. With an outstanding tradition of old and new residents coming together to serve the greater good, Union Square is actively engaged in with local nonprofits and other neighboring communities. Federal Hill is a neighborhood primarily of brick, late 19th Century homes. Many have been rehabbed into modern residences in the recent past. Some of these historic homes have been converted to apartment houses. Federal Hill is a cohesive, inclusive neighborhood with a strong community sense which works hard to preserve its individuality. There are still many residents who are second and third generation South Baltimoreans who are equally proud of their heritage. Most homes are owner-occupied, but there is a good supply of rental housing as well. The larger neighborhood is generally referred to as being comprised of two parts, Federal Hill and West Federal Hill; both working collective to preserve and enhance the community.
