Providence, RI

Providence is the capital of Rhode Island and one of the first cities ever established in the United States. Founded in 1636, Providence is the 2nd or 3rd most populous city in the New England region. Historically, Providence has been known the silverware and jewelry industry. Top Neighborhoods

East Side is a conglomeration of neighborhoods separated from East Providence by the Sekonk River. The East Sides houses most of Brown University's facilities and the Rhode Island School of Design. The East Side neighborhood has within its borders numerous independent shops, restaurants, and cafes adjoining Brown University to South Walter Street. The housing stock is tailored to the needs of the University community, which in a lot of ways, makes it very affordable.

The Jewelry District is a neighborhood located just south of Downtown Providence. As its name suggests, the neighborhood was once home to a large number of jewelry manufacturing companies beginning in the 19th century. The Fox Point Hurricane Barrier is the most prominent landmark is housed within the Jewelry District, as well as Davol Square. The Jewelry District has a number of converted warehouses that have been turned into chic loft apartments; with more plans for apartment and loft development in the near future.

Silver Lake is a neighborhood on the western edge of Providence, known for its Italian roots. Previously a predominantly agricultural community, Silver Lake has undergone rapid urbanization. Today, Silver Lake is a stable, densely settled urban neighborhood. About one in six housing units in Silver Lake is a single family unit, and most other structures house two to four families. There are four relatively small parks within the boundaries of Silver Lake. Neutaconkanut Park occupies most of Silver Lake between Plainfield Street and bordering Johnsons Street. Neutaconkanut is a 73-acre park with a recreation center, public pool, baseball fields, basketball courts, as well as forest and walking trails.

Fox Point is a residential neighborhood that remains home to a large portion of Providence's Portuguese population. Fox Point is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Providence. Fox Point retains much of its historical character, with housing stock dating from the 18th and 19th centuries in much of the neighborhood. Fox Point contains a prominent port as is a destination for maritime activities. With regard to the housing stock in the Fox Point neighborhood, there are a number of multi-family and apartment homes. The Fox Point neighborhood has both public and private school options for the families in the area to choose from.

With Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design housed within its borders, College Hill is one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in all of Rhode Island. Thayer Street is a very popular block, as it caters to the needs of the college communities with many affordable shops, restaurants, coffeehouses, cafes and bars. Housing in College Hill is varied and affordable as well.
