Georgetown, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Washington, DC, served as a major port and commercial center during colonial times because of its prime location on the Potomac River. Alexandria, Virginia is an independent city located along the Potomac River, six miles south of downtown Washington, DC. During the Colonial and Revolutionary periods, the City of Fairfax was frequented by George Washington, George Mason, and William Fairfax. Reston, Virginia is a suburb of Washington, DC, located in the heart of the rapidly growing Dulles Technology Corridor.
